| What seasons to come to Cape Town: |
The Winelands Region has a Mediterranean type climate moderated by southerly winds in summer. Winter months are mild and changeable, influenced by the westerly winds from the southern ocean bringing frequent rain. Occasional snow falls on the surrounding mountains and if southerly winds pick up then temperatures can plummet. Summer months are hot with scarcely any rain, often cooled by the ‘Cape Doctor’, the South-East wind that clears away the smog from Cape Town's skies.
It’s a well kept secret that autumn (March to May) is the best time to visit this region. The wind drops and the days are mellow and warm. The Western Cape climate has perfect conditions for the vineyards of the Winelands. Autumn transforms the vineyard slopes from verdant green to a glowing mantle of gold and scarlet . |
| Geography: |
The fertile green valleys of the Cape Winelands are surrounded by proud mountain ranges. Towns and villages have many historic homesteads and monuments, and every so often fruit orchards are to be seen, whose produce may be found in all corners of the world.
The rich, fertile soils along the Breede River Valley and especially the areas of Somerset West, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, have become world famous for their whites, reds, sherries, ports and brandies. |
| Safety in Cape Town: |
The Winelands Region is generally a safe and friendly city, although it is strongly advised that safety precautions be taken. Due to poverty in certain areas, crime and theft can be a problem. Try not to carry large amounts of cash and be discreet with expensive cameras, jewellery etc. Do not walk in deserted areas, especially after dark and always park in designated, well-lit areas. When driving, keep your doors locked and while parked lock your belongings in thr boot rather than leave them in the open. Ask locals or your hosts to advise you on areas that should be avoided. |
